How to Keep Your Joints Healthy At a Desk Job

Published on October 18th, 2019

Sitting in a chair in front of a computer from 9 am-5 pm every day is not the ideal way to keep your joints healthy, however, most of us are doing this 5 days a week. Use these tips from Gitelis Orthopedics to stay healthy at work and avoid seeing an orthopedist in Elgin.

Take Breaks

First things first, you should never be sitting for 8 hours straight. Find times to take breaks from sitting throughout the day. If you have a standing desk, try standing for half the day. If not, take laps around the office to fill up your water bottle, grab a snack or use the bathroom at least once every hour. You can even take a walk outside during your lunch break.

Keep Good Posture

Neck, shoulder and back pain can be common if you are sitting with poor posture. Our orthopedist in Elgin recommends setting your chair at a height where you can have your shoulders back and relaxed while sitting up tall. You should not be reaching for your keyword or leaning towards the screen. Keep the top of your screen level to your eyes.

Exercise After Work

Since you are getting very little movement in at work, find a way to squeeze exercise into your schedule. Whether it’s after work or on the weekend everyone should be exercising for at least 30 minutes 3-5 times a week.
