Avoiding Injury While Working from Home

Many of us are still working from home to help practice social distancing. The new normal is setting in, with at-home desk setups, Zoom conference calls and a commute that is significantly shortened. However, it’s common to experience changes within your body as well; some are experiencing light soreness while others are experiencing full-on injuries. Here are some tips from our orthopedic surgeon in Barrington on how to feel your best while working from home.

Practice Good Posture

Now is more important than ever to examine your posture and make necessary changes. It’s easy to slump while working, especially if you’re doing so from your bed or your couch. Consider investing in a more supportive chair if you will be working from home for some time to come. You can also set recurring reminders on your phone or computer to check your posture! The more aware of it you are, the more you will be able to correct it.

Take Breaks

It sounds simple, but taking a break at least once per hour can help circulate blood throughout your body. Get up and refill your water, stretch, or go to the bathroom whenever you begin to feel tense or antsy. Not only are breaks good for your physical health, but for your mental health as well.

Stretch, Stretch, Stretch

Speaking of stretching, we have outlined some effective, simple stretches to get you through each day.

  • Butterfly stretch: Sit on the ground and bend your legs so that the bottoms of your feet are touching. Try to bring your heels as close to your body as possible, flattening your knees to the ground. This simple stretch will help open up your hips.
  • Touch your toes: This is as easy as it sounds! Stand up and try to touch your fingertips to your toes. If your hamstrings are extremely tight, don’t push yourself too much. Bending your knees is okay, too!
  • Leg swings: Stretch your hips effectively by holding onto the back of a couch or a chair for balance. Stand on one foot and swing the other foot from side-to-side in front of your body while keeping your torso straight.
